The Mayday Movement USA, a grassroots organization staging a continuous sit-in on the National Mall to call for the impeachment and removal of President Trump, met today with Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI-13) to present him with its inaugural “Good Trouble” award. The award “recognizes individuals who take bold, often unpopular actions in defense of the Constitution.”
Rep. Thanedar was recognized for introducing articles of impeachment against President Trump on April 28. (Thanedar, Congressman Shri Thanedar Introduces Articles of Impeachment Against Donald J. Trump for High Crimes and Misdemeanors)
His resolution, H.Res. 353, co-sponsored by Rep. Al Green (D-TX-9), alleges multiple constitutional violations by the President, including:
Obstruction of justice and abuse of executive authority
Usurpation of Congressional appropriations powers
Misuse of trade authority and international aggression
Violations of First Amendment rights
Creation of an unlawful executive office
Bribery and corruption
Tyrannical overreach
Speaking with Mayday Movement USA, the congressman highlighted due process violations under the current administration as a key motivation behind H.Res. 353.
Rep. Thanedar further spoke to his concerns driving the articles of impeachment, noting:
“We can’t let [these] unconstitutional activities continue. You know, we gotta stand, we gotta stand, and — and [sic] if I have to be the first one to do that, I’ll be happy to do that, because I love this country. You know, this is a — this is a [sic] great country, and our greatness is ahead of us. But if we let, uh, rule of law be gone, if we see this abuse of power, then — then [sic] we’re not going to achieve our greatness.”
“People do not accept this grab of power,” Rep. Thanedar told the gathered demonstrators from Mayday Movement USA. “We have to stand and say, this is not America.” He expressed gratitude for the movement’s support, adding, “Thank you for all your activism [and] all your hard work.”
Speaking to reporters, he acknowledged receiving negative messages on social media since filing the resolution, including what he said were over 60 real threats, but emphasized what he described as broad public support. “No one says the articles are incorrect,” he noted.
According to Politico, four co-sponsors withdrew their names shortly after the articles of impeachment were filed, citing confusion over whether the resolution was final or still a draft, and whether it had been approved by Democratic leadership at the time of submission. Rep. Green formally joined the resolution as a co-sponsor on May 5, 2025.
